Well, there's good and bad here. The graphics are great; I like how all the enemy types are distinct, very easy to tell apart. The programming is pretty solid...except that on level 20 I somehow lost half my weapons and got stuck trying to survive with the short-range gun. That didn't last long, of course. The fact that the enemies randomly appear makes it "frantic" in a nice way. However, it's really annoying that it's another one of those games where you have to upgrade your "money" before anything else and you have to buy ammo after every battle. Another thing that was frustrating was that the coins will disappear after a few seconds; you can circle around a bunch of monsters to kill them, but is it worth it to spend one of your precious 3 health points to grab their coins? The hardest enemies were the eyeballs. Very annoying.

Seriously? A find the differences game? Aren't there enough of these already?

You didn't check for impossible positions.

I keep pressing up arrow to start but the guy just hits his head or something. Too bad, I was kinda looking forward to playing this.

Ugh, this game is frustrating. First it's a real pain to earn all the "more crystals" upgrades before upgrading your tank at all. Then, obviously the special weapons are pointless since it's most efficient to upgrade them before using them, and THEN you ALSO have to buy ammo? Fortunately the standard cannon is fine. So it's like huge amounts of grinding, and then around wave 25 it actually gets hard. The only real skill, though, is leading creatures away from your base while shooting them. That's the frustrating part. Beyond that it's just ho-hum, more shooting and running in circles. It's like, a lot of boredom punctuated by moments of genuine frustration...I hear that's what war is like, but it doesn't make for a fun GAME.

I think you nailed the atmosphere pretty well. The gameplay was, eh, okay. Personally I'd like to see a longer game, maybe a hub level (or password system!), one or two gameplay gimmicks...

The response to SN2083 so far has been overwhelming; I'm definitely looking to take this style + the feedback I'm getting here on NG to create a more fleshed out NES-like game.

Kinda slow-paced. If you hold down the button, it doesn't shoot repeatedly...I mean, maybe that's not a BUG, but it's not how you'd expect things to work if you've played a lot of other games like this. It's annoying that you only have one 'health'. In fact, it might even be impossible to finish the first level, but I didn't care enough to try very hard.

Also...Why Henry Jenkins? Are you upset that he left MIT or something?

thrgriffin responds:

Hi, thank you for your review. I thought that having a reload time between shots would add difficulty but the consensus so far seems to be that it's just annoying! A health bar would have been a very good idea in retrospect!

This was part of a university module on new media (I study film, hence why this isn't a much better game). For the module we had to study a lot of Henry Jenkins and I thought this would be a fun take on the assignment. I have a lot of love for HJ though.

Holy crap this is awesome! It's like Atari 2600 meets SCP. I'm sure Warren Robinett would salute you.
